World’s Top 6 play the Chessable Masters

World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen heads the field for the Chessable Masters, the 3rd event in the $1 million Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour. The 12-player $150,000 tournament features the world’s top six players, eight of the Top 10, six of the Candidates (plus Teimour Radjabov), the Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge finalists Hikaru Nakamura and Daniil Dubov, and Tour debutants Harikrishna and Vladislav Artemiev. It starts Saturday June 20th, with a preliminary stage eliminating four players before the knockout begins.

The tournament is sponsored by chessable.com, the world’s leading online chess training platform, and was introduced as follows by Magnus Carlsen:

I am proud to announce the next stage in the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour, which I hope will bring something new for spectators and fans. The Chessable Masters will be an elite super-tournament but one in which you can get more involved, have fun and improve your chess. As for me, I will be back determined to improve from the last event. My ambition is to win the Chessable Masters.

The Chessable Masters has a stunning line-up:

And once again there’s $150,000 at stake, with $45,000 for first prize.

The winner will also join Magnus Carlsen, Daniil Dubov and the winner of the 4th event, the Legends of Chess, in the $300,000 Grand Final this August.

The format is the same as for the Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge i.e. 15 minutes + 10 seconds/move rapid chess, with a preliminary stage followed by an 8-player knockout where each match is the best of three sets - except for two changes:

  • Instead of a 12-player round-robin for the preliminary stage the players will be split into two groups of six, who play each other twice over 10 rounds and two days. The top 4 in each group qualify for the knockout
  • The knockout is the same except that if a set finishes 2:2 then before an Armageddon game two 5+3 blitz games will be played first
